A Brief History of South Windsor, CT

The land now known as South Windsor was first occupied by Native Americans as early as the 15th century. They were followed by English settlers, including a group from Dorchester, Massachusetts, who eventually became the founding fathers of the town. South Windsor was formally incorporated in 1845.

The town’s Main Street was completed in 1680 and was a main travel route to Hartford. Tobacco was the main crop in the area from the 1600s to the 1900s. Rye was also widely grown and led to the establishment of several distilleries.

The town’s agriculture industry started diminishing in the 1950s when the community transformed into a suburban residential community with industrial and commercial districts. From 1950, South Windsor saw rapid population growth, expanding more than three times by 2000.
